Let it dough!

Where better to way to spend Christmas than holed up in the kitchen baking, illustrator Christoph Niemann, who also brought us Lego NY, has been baking with his kids and creating some ace dough shapes. More can be seen on his N.Y. Times Blog.

Contrast and Compare

A short documentary video of an example of school bullying in Japan and strict control and pressure throughout childhood and later life. It can be viewed by clicking here, embedding not allowed sadly... picture from DaCafe I don't know much about it, as unfortunately it is in japanese, but from what you can see it is a photographer taking very idyllic pictures of his very adorable family, a happy contrast to the video.

Today I learnt a little bit about the area I live in from Wikipedia.

Flingern Düsseldorf

Flingern is a former blue-collar borough of Düsseldorf. Located northeast of Düsseldorf (proper), it is divided into two boroughs today: Flingern-Nord and Flingern-Süd. While Flingern-Nord has a younger population and is more attractive to middle-class families, Flingern-Süd is still mostly home to working class people.


Flingern was first mentioned in 1193 as a forested area that was ruled by the Knights Hayc of Flingern. In the 13th and 14th centuries the City of Düsseldorf grew on the grounds of the Knights Hayc von Flingern. By the end of the 14th century the knights lost their influence.


During the Industrial Revolution Flingern became an industrial and working class town and to this day it has many old and new factories. Only the old facade remains of the old baths of the early 20th century, which has been converted into a modern wellness center on the inside. An old steel factory was converted to a popular discothèque called Stahlwerk and was one of the early venues playing Techno music in the 1990s.

Fling Gern

Düsseldorf Flingern is my hood. Unfortunately I don't spend much time in it because I'm a little bit lazy and find it all a bit too spread out, which is a shame as it has so many lovely places to go. Today I ventured through the borough in the rain and was sad to see a lot of places had closed although some were being replaced by pop up stores which are also nice to see, it is sad to see the end of others. The area is quite a creative rich area, with some beautiful old buildings and tree lined "Allees", the cafes and bars are also quite bohemian and aesthetically faddy in a way creating a unique type community, this can be seen with posters with great graphics promoting events and fellow businesses of the area. I especially love all the different typefaces and tiles!

 Watch out for a lot more Flingern based posts.

Food Regret.

Had Matjes on bread for Abendbrot the other eve. Turns out Matjes aren't my cup of tea. I don't like food regrets.

Pythagora Switch ピタゴラスイッチ

Mornings have become quite a long and harrowing procedure since winter popped by, and has got me dreaming of machines which can make this a much more simpler and pleasant process, which lead to watching a handful of Rube Goldberg machines (not Rune Glifberg, as I often misname them). Like Yuri Suzuki's Ontbijt Maschine and PeeWee Hermann's Breakfast Machine, I wanted something that would involve a meal. Having fallen for convenience food lately and loaded up on instant packs of ramen, I felt this would be a simple act of arranging a course from my room to a kettle over a bowl, but this has been done. So, the point being, I'd like to make one of these, and will do, don't know what it'll do but it will be practical as hell.
